Ethical Horizons Townhall — Madison, Wisconsin | July 10-11, 2025

July 10, 2025 - July 11, 2025

During July 2025, members of the Ethical Horizons Project gathered in Madison, Wisconsin, for meetings with University faculty and held a Town Hall discussion at the Pyle Center on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus. The Town Hall brought together community members, activists, University faculty, and advocates concerned with the rapid development of artificial intelligence and the expanding infrastructure associated with its growth.

The discussion focused on the need for responsible governance of artificial intelligence and greater public engagement in decisions that may have significant consequences for communities. Participants discussed approaches to AI oversight, the siting and development of large-scale data centers, and the demands these facilities can place on energy, water, land, and other shared resources.

The meeting also explored practical ways in which citizens, educators, researchers, and public-interest organizations can participate in the development of sensible policy and advocate for appropriate safeguards. Particular attention was given to ensuring that the economic and technological benefits of artificial intelligence do not come at disproportionate cost to communities, public infrastructure, or the environment.

The Town Hall reflected the Project’s broader commitment to informed public dialogue and to advocating for policies that encourage technological progress while protecting the public interest and the commons.
